AHEAD is a civil society organisation with a goal of reaching to the marginalized sections of the society including people with disabilities (PWDs). The organization helps those with intellectual and development disabilities.
Vision
The vision of the organisation is to create a future where all individuals , or groups, with disabilities are allowed to participate in any environment which focuses on the internationally recognised human rights, standards and values.
Mission
The mission and aims of the organisation is to help those individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as autism or cerebral palsy, get involved in the economical, social, and political development of India by providing them with additional educational support to help increase their independence in employment and offering encouragement to help them become a productive and functioning member of society and by supporting the members of society so that they understand the disabilities and are able to promote equality.
The two main areas that the organisation focuses on are-
Educational services - AHEAD aims to provide an advanced educational system which will help those who have an intellectual, sensory, and developmental disabilities. This educational service allows them to learn and work towards being a more independent and learn to seek employment.
Human Resource Development- AHEAD understands the need of the quality manpower to work with people with disabilities (Divyangjan), and we have started a L.R.S. World College, a teacher training institute. Currently, we are running two courses- D.Ed. Special Education (ID/MR) and D.Ed. Special Education (HI). These courses are equivalent to D.El.Ed./BTC/BSTC, also. The courses are recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), a statuary body under Government of India.
Promoting the Rights of Those With Intellectual Disabilities, autism, and hearing impairment - AHEAD is there to support people with these disabilities within the Indian community and to encourage the Government to promote the rights of those people. The organisation works towards encouraging the public understanding of these rights.
Future Plans
Care and Welfare Services - All of the activity which the organisation undertakes focuses around caring and supporting these people who have intellectual disabilities and hearing impairment, and these can be done in a more efficient manner in a hostel set-up for the children coming from far areas. The hostel has to be created at the same time as the organisation is there to provide a home and care so that those with intellectual disabilities, autism, and hearing impairment are encouraged towards independent living.
AHEAD and the education programs they provide has reached hundreds of people with disabilities, parents, teachers and a wide variety of other members of the community. It is important for the society to continue to grow so that those who have an intellectual and developmental disabilities get the help they need and to the best possible standard.
